Interested in running for charity? Consider the Meaningful Miles Program Last year, many of our members expressed interest in making their race experience more meaningful by dedicating their miles to charity. Rather than choose a charity for everyone, we decided to allow each walker/runner that was interested in doing a charitable race to choose the organization that they would like to work with. In this way, the walker/runner is more connected to the charity and the meaning that it has to them personally. We invite you to consider making your miles more meaningful and sharing your story with us so that we can feature you and your charity on our web site. To help you to organize your fundraising, Cheryl Previte, one of our team members, suggests using the Firstgiving web service. Cheryl dedicated her 2009 MORE ½ marathon to a relative last year who had lost her battle with a serious illness. Firstgiving allows you to build a fundraising page on their web site. It is easy to use and your donors can easily access the link. 7.5% of what you raise will go back to Firstgiving as service fee. You can check it out @ http://www.firstgiving.com/ Running for charity can be very motivating and extremely rewarding. Since 1995, I have raised over 10,000 for cancer charities. The first marathon I ran was dedicated to my dad who died of cancer. I thought it was an appropriate way to honor his memory. You may want to dedicate your efforts to a cause that is close to your heart or in someone’s honor or memory. Whatever the reason, charitable racing is a wonderful way to use your athletic talents to benefit those unable to accomplish what you can. Dixie Douville, RN ,BSN |
